Minister of Youth Development, Malam Bolaji Abdullahi

The Minister of Youth Development, Malam Bolaji Abdullahi, has  said that five and not 18 prospective NYSC members lost their lives in an auto crash on their way to Taraba.

The Minister’s Special Assistant on Media, Mr Julius Ogunro, said in a statement on Thursday that the prospective NYSC members were travelling from Lagos to Taraba where they were posted for the service

The minister, however, said contrary to earlier reports which stated that 18 corps members died, the police could only confirm the death of five prospective corps members in the crash.

“Contrary to earlier reports, which stated that 18 corps members were killed in an auto crash on their way to the NYSC Orientation Camp in Taraba, we wish to clarify that the police could only confirm the death of five prospective corps members of the fourteen people who died in the fatal crash,” the statement stated.

He said findings revealed that six other would-be corps members sustained various degrees of injuries in the accident that occurred at Ilesha in Osun on March 6.

Abdullahi, who said he was saddened by the tragic occurrence, restated his commitment to work with the NYSC in order to review situations that might have contributed to such an incident.

The minister, however, commiserates with the families of the deceased and described the deaths  as painful and a big loss to Nigeria.

  1. It is so easy to say May their Soul rest in peace. How about the Parents who may have spent fortun to train them. Some sold all they have with the intention that when they graduate and get job, they would assist. But all these wishes just come to an abrumpt end. May we not wash our hands to crack Palm kernel only for chicken to eat up. In all we thank God for everything. May their soul rest in peace and May God grant their loved ones the fortitude to bear these irrepairable loss. Amen.
