The Kano State Police yesterday discovered three sacks containing two powerful explosive substances: Trinitrotoluene (TNT) and Pentaerythritol (PETN).
PETN, the substance found in the underwear of Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, is one of the most powerful high explosives known, while TNT is a commonly used military and industrial explosive.
The explostive substances were found at the Rijiyar Zaki area of Kano metropolis.
Each bag of the chemicals, which were abandoned by unknown persons, was valued at N3million, the police said.
“The explosives are extremely sensitive and can explode easily,” said Kano police Commissioner, Mr. Ibrahim K Idris. Idris, who addressed a press conference at the state police command headquarters in Bompai, disclosed that the police were able to recover the explosives after a tip off from members of the public.
According to the CP, the bags containing the expensive arsenal were detected in the early hours of yesterday at the roadside, following which they were retrieved by the command’s bomb experts, saying the materials were found to be “more dangerous than fertilizer bombs.”
