Abeokuta residents amazed as ice falls from the sky

 Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital, south-west of Nigeria, on Thursday recorded an unusual form of rainfall with ice falling, also known as a hailstorm.

Hail is a form of solid precipitation. It consists of balls or irregular lumps of ice, each of which is referred to as a hail stone.

Residents witnessed ice blocks, the size of gravels falling from the sky leaving the very apprehensive when solid blocks started falling on rooftops, road and vehicles, making very loud unusual sound.

According to reports, the ice storm started during the heavy rainfall which started around 5.42pm, lasting about 27 minutes with strong winds.

Wind shields of three vehicles were reportedly broken by the ice at Ake, the heart of the ancient town.

Similar ice storm were experienced other parts of the city such as Panseke, Kuto and at the MKO Abiola Stadium.

A witness who wrote his experience on a social media platform stated that;

“I’m presently driving somewhere around Kuto, in Abeokuta and there’s massive hail storm here. It’s so strong; it’s got people leaving their cars for shelter. To give you an idea, it’s like having gravel poured on the roof of your vehicle from a four storey building.”

Another witness, Mr. Denola Badejo of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library(OOPL), Abeokuta, said he was afraid when the rain caught him driving.

“I thought it would break my glass. The first time I witnessed it was in 1977 in Ijebu – Ode. I was in the secondary school then. During my first experience, tiny fishes fell from the sky with the ice. I caught one of the fishes and tried to rear it, but it died later.” he said

  • I don’t think is unusual bc I ve experienced it in those days when I was a child at Ado Ekiti several times, even in Lagos in the 70s, I think why is not happening again is dt we ve so much damaged our ozone layer dt those natural things cannot happen again.

  • REPENT NOW B4 IT’S TOO LATE, IT IS VERY CLEAR DAT THE KINGDOM OF GOD IS AT HAND. PLS DON’T B LEFT OUT,EVERYTINS IS READY IN HEAVEN THE TRUMPET MIGHT GO OFF ANY MINTES PLS B PREPARE. HELL IS NOT FOR HUMANS, IS NOT PLEASANT PLACE TO BE.

  • Falling of hailstorms from the sky when it rains, is not an unusual phenomenon. Why is it news now? I do not see it as strange rather a normal process of evaporation, cloud, condensation,etc. Information is news when it is new and strange.

  • hailstorm where ice blocks drop 4rm the is a natural phenomenon and not a sign of end times as some people have so forecast. It is a regular thing that happens in jos plateau. There shldnt be need 4 the pedamonium it is causing in the west or any where else that might be experiencing this 4 the first time. At least, ur famoust prfessors shld explain this 2 u cos there is no need 4 the sudden need 4 an unremorsful repentance yet. Lol.

  • Is this really news? A hailstorm is not an unusual phenomenon. It is quite common in parts of the country and many parts of the world. There should be no course for alarm.

  • Hailstorm is not a new phenomenon, its a usual occurrence in various part of the country. Its even not common today as it used to be in four to five decades ago. Environmental degradation is changing so many things hence it looks strange to younger generation.

  • This is not new, i could remember vividly, when i was very young in my home town in Ekiti, this kind of thing happens while there is rainfall. We even use to enter the rain and handpick it just to lick it, though it was in smaller forms, there was a time that crayfish fell with the rain in a very large quantity. While all these comments, i dont think is a new thing for hailstone falling with rain.
