Afe Babalola advocates performance as yardstick for varsity teachers’ pay

REMUNERATIONS, promotions and continued employment of university lecturers should be based on the quality of their research works and their inputs to the university system rather than their certificate and number of years spent in service.

This, according to Chief Afe Babalola (SAN) would help revamp the falling standard of education in Nigeria and enhance academic advancement in the country.

The former Pro-Chancellor of the University of Lagos who said this yesterday during the re-appraisal exercise for the academic and non-academic staff of ABUAD, stressed that the exercise became imperative to ascertain how competent the workers were in the discharge of their duties.

The legal luminary who is the founder of Afe Babalola University (ABUAD) Ado Ekiti decried a situation where lecturers and teachers would not want their skills to be tested after their employment.

He therefore advised university administrators in the country to adopt a system where their academic and non academic members of staff would be subjected to periodic appraisals and use the outcome of such tests to determine their remunerations and their continued stay in the system.

He said that although the credentials presented before the workers were employed were thoroughly verified, but the re-appraisal exercise was carried out because some might be certificated without being competent.

Babalola said some workers of the varsity might lose their jobs if they did not measure up to the standard being set by the institution. He stated that students would also play roles in appraising the competence of their lecturers.

“In this university, promotions and salary depend on your productivity level and not just the number of years.  We pay you according to your inputs here. It is practised in some European countries. This method makes people to work harder and it is good for the system,” he said.
