- Kaduna state government imposes 24 hour curfew to forestall further violence.
At least 34 people have been killed as suicide bombers believed to be members of the dreaded Islamist sect Boko Haram struck five different churches in four locations in Kaduna State today.
These figures only account for victims taken to the three main hospitals and does not include those taken to other private hospitals.
An eye witness said that one of the suicide bombers attacked the children wing of ECWA church, Wusasa, Zaria killing the Sunday School teacher and ten children.
Dr. Taylor Adeyemi, the acting Chief Medical Director of St. Luke’s hospital in Wusasa, said 40 victims, mostly children were brought into their hospital following the blast at ECWA in Wusasa. Of this number, three were dead on arrival.
Another witness was quoted saying that Christ the King Catholic Church, Sabon Gari Zaria was also attacked by a lone suicide bomber leaving 10 people dead and over 50 injured.
At Shalom Pentecostal Church, Trikani, Kaduna five people were killed after another suicide bomber crashed through the church gate.
The suspected Boko Haram bombers also struck two more church in Christian dominated locations in Kaduna.
“There were two simultaneous bomb attacks on churches in Nassarawa and Barnawa in the south of Kaduna this morning. We are yet to get information on casualities,” Kaduna spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Aliyu Mohammed told AFP news agency.
These senseless and bloody bomb attacks triggered violent reprisal attacks by rampaging christian youths numbering in their hundreds who attacked people looking like Hausa-Fulani in the area. The reprisal attacks left about 11 people dead and several others injured.
The enraged youths reportedly barricaded roads in the towns of Trijania, Gonin Gora and Sabon Tasha.
Many Hausa-Fulani people were rescued by armed soldiers and police on patrol, while several others took refuge at Kaduna Mobile Police Barracks.
A man said he had to scrap a trip to the national capital Abuja.
“I cancelled my trip to Abuja because of the huge number of rioters that have taken over the roads,” he told AFP.
The Kaduna state government has imposed a dusk to dawn curfew to bring the volatile situation under control. This curfew has left many people trapped in various locations in Kaduna.

It seems that a Sunday cannot go by without a church being attacked in the North.
Just last Sunday, Boko Haram claimed responsibility for Gun and bomb attacks on a church in Jos, the Plateau State capital, and Biu in Borno State. The attack left about 10 people dead.
Boko Haram says it wants Islamic sharia law in place across Nigeria.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for Sunday’s bomb attacks, Boko Haram is widely suspected.
