Euro 2012: The Ashleys Cost England a Semi Final Slot

After a disappointingly goalless draw in the quarter final encounter between England and Italy on Sunday, 24th June, 2012, England has crashed out of the 2012 football tournament by losing 2-4 to Italy via penalty shootouts.

The game was decided by penalty kicks as none of the two teams was able to find the back of the net after the normal stoppage time and after the thirty minutes of extra time.

The Italians started the penalty shootouts with Mario Balotelli who put the ball behind his Manchester City teammate, Joe Hart to take the Italians ahead. However, Riccardo Montolivo’s miss of the Italians’ second attempt meant that England went ahead briefly as England converted their own first two attempts through Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard.

But misses from Ashley Cole and Ashley Young meant the Italians won the day eventually, successfully converting four of their penalties (the last three through Andrea Pirlo, Antonio Nocerino and Alessandro Diamanti) to England’s two converted penalty kicks. Italy will now play Germany at the semi finals.
