Northern Ireland Says People Who Sleep With Africans Are Not Eligible to Donate Blood

Northern Ireland’s health minister, Edwin Poots continues to receive heavy criticism over an unguarded statement credited to him. As regards who is eligible to donate blood in his country, Mr Poots has made it clear that gays should not be allowed to make blood donation. However, he also mentioned his intentions to include other groups in this.

As Poots puts it, “I think that people who engage in high-risk sexual behaviour in general should be excluded from giving blood… and so someone who has sex with somebody in Africa or sex with prostitutes, I am very reluctant about those people being able to give blood”.

Define insensitivity. We might think it is only in Nigeria that top government officials make unguarded statements. Africa might have her setbacks in terms of health challenges and other issues. However, a good number of these problems have been traced back to the so called West.

To think that this manner of statement is coming from a top government official of a country that not so long ago opened its doors for a substantial number of Africans. The African Caribbean Community Support Organisation in Northern Ireland (ACSONI) have expressed their disgust at this statement.
