Witnesses and colleagues of the politicians said the two were killed by the gunmen, but a military spokesman later claimed that they had both died from shock.

Hon. Simon Mwadkwon, a member of the House of Representatives was critically injured as a result of the attack.

The Plateau State commissioner of Information, Abraham Yiljap confirmed the shooting in a statement.

The three were attending today’s mass burial ceremony of the many people who lost their lives in Barkin Ladi when violence broke out between Fulani herdsmen and Berom tribesmen on Saturday.

The burial ceremony was just concluded when heavily armed unidentified gunmen disguised in military uniform surprised the mourners, shooting at the senator and other officials from close range.

Fulani herdsmen were blamed for the violence, but they denied involvement.

“It was a horrible sight, people ran helter-skelter as the gunmen continued to shoot,” a witness said.

Senator Dantong Dalyop was until his death, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Health.
