In the newest ranking of the top 100 universities in Africa, by 4icu.org in its 2012 World University Web Ranking: Top 100 Universities and Colleges in Africa, the University of Lagos takes the 16th position on the continent, coming behind University of Nairobi and University of Ghana, both of which took the 14th and 15th positions respectively.
However, the ranking meant that UNILAG is the number one university in Nigeria as the other Nigerians in the ranking are farther behind. They are: University of Ilorin (39),University of Ibadan (40), Obafemi Awolowo University (42), University of Benin (45),University of Port Harcourt (52), University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (64), Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (84) and University of Jos (88).
University of Cape Town, South Africa was the first on the list, followed closely by University of Stellenbosch, South Africa and the University of Pretoria, also in South Africa. As a matter of fact, the first six Universities on the list were South African Universities, with Cairo University, Egypt coming seventh.
