The Ohinoyi of Ebira land, Alhaji Dr. Ado Ibrahim, has called on his people to stay at home on Sunday to observe their Sallah prayer because of the security situation in the area.
The traditional ruler’s plea was contained contained in a communique issued by the Ebira Area Traditional Council. The statement followed a spate of security challenges, yet again in the community. The communique also stressed the need for Muslims to pray for the repose of the souls of some people, including two soldiers, murdered in the area.
On Saturday, barely two weeks after a church and a mosque were attacked, gunmen and Mobile Policemen engaged in a shootout in Okene at the end of which one of the gunmen lay dead. According to eyewitness account, the incident occurred at Idare, Okene, when the Mobile Policemen stormed the hideout of the gunmen where they recovered rocket launchers, guns and bombs. The shootout, which lasted three hours, put Okene in confusion again.
However, Kogi State Police Commissioner, Mr. Muhammed Katsina, confirming the incident, described the gunmen as armed robbers, stressing that when his men stormed their hide out, they opened fire but his men were able to contain the situation. Curious Nigerians would want to ask: what would armed robbers be doing with rocket launchers?
