Mrs. Mbatumun Oseh, a member of St. Theresa Church at Anyin, Logo Local Government Area, of Benue State, has learnt a simple lesson in a very difficult way when she gave her baby to a stranger during church service, an event which was followed by the disappearance of both baby and stranger.
The incident took place during the church service on Sunday, when an unknown woman, who stood at the entrance of the church, approached her and offered to help her hold the baby to avoid being pushed down by other members of the church. Mrs. Oseh obliged her and thereafter, the strange woman also offered to sit at the back seat with the baby to avoid distracting members, while the baby’s mother sat in front.
Mrs. Oseh, however, instructed one of her children, about 5 years old, to sit close to the woman, while the service went on. However, the strange woman sent the older child to a nearby shop to buy her sachet (pure) water, but before the girl came back, the woman had disappeared with the baby. The little girl raised alarm that attracted church members, who searched the entire premises, but the baby and the woman could not be found.
Commenting on the incident later on, the parish priest of the church, Rev. Fr. Bernard Achuku, said the entire parishioners were shocked by the incident, adding that efforts were on to locate the woman and the missing baby. The matter was said to have been reported to the police at Ayiin and Ugba, the local government headquarters. Benue State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Daniel Ezeala, confirmed the incident, saying it was under investigation.
