Abbas Ahmed, a civil servant in Bauchi state has been arraigned before a Chief Magistrate’s Court by the Bauchi state police command for allegedly defaming the character of Governor Isa Yuguda via Facebook.
Ahmed was alleged to have accused the governor of splashing huge public funds on the wedding of his son.
The state’s Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice had sent a request to the State Criminal Investigation Department, to investigate the case of injurious falsehood and defamation contrary to Section 393, 394 of the Penal Code.
Police prosecutor, Sergeant Rufai Ahmed, told the court that upon receipt of the request, the department swung into action.
According to him, “on September 4 2012, the defendant, Abbas Ahmed, used his Etisalat GSM number 0809826243* on Facebook with email address firstname.lastname@example.org and made some allegations on the funding of the wedding of the state governor’s son, which took place at Azare in Bauchi state on September 8, 2012.
“The said Abbas on Facebook accused Yuguda’s administration of financial misappropriation, but in the course of investigation, the said Abbas A. Ahmed denied the allegation contrary to Section 393, 394 of the Penal Code.”
The police prosecutor appealed to the court to remand the suspect in police custody to enable them conclude their investigations. The presiding Chief Magistrate, Mohammed Kafin Madaki granted the application and remanded the suspect in police custody.
The case was adjourned to Thursday, today, for further mention.
