[Opinion] This Government That Has Failed Its Citizens!

Never was it known where leadership in every sense of the word is midwifed the way it is done in my country. Never was it known where the welfare of the citizenry is ironically the cornerstone of the leadership of a nation. Never was it known where corruption and the dire need to swim in the dirty pools of political anomaly is a religion; but in my own country it has not only become a religion, it has also become something close to a tradition. Instead of being vicious, it has been exchanged for virtues. Poor Nigeria.
My understanding of a government growing up as a little boy, was one where the leaders would never sleep or know anything called pleasure, until the political, social and economic problems of the people they are responsible for i.e. the citizens have been ameliorated to a great extent worthy of commendation, but in my own country, let Jupiter fall over earth, the government gives not a hoot. In my own country, the masses travel by road submerged by flood and bathed with death traps euphemized for pot-holes while the government and its officials stuck fleets of private jets with which they travel in convenience that surpasses none.
Our health facilities have been reduced to something I cannot find a better adjective to quantify, our educational system despite the billions of naira sunk into it every fiscal year have continuously failed to yield any returns by being listed among the comity of best universities globally, agriculture and the presence of food on our tables have become a sordid tale, our economy has become one of a global concern where the purchasing power of the Naira has been lost, or what do you say about a nation whose economy is suffering from a cash flow problem but yet not broke….isn’t it some kind of a beer-parlor joke?
We were assured and promised of a better society developmentally, if only we could let-go of the subsidy on the price of the Petroleum Motor Spirit on the first day of this year. Even though it was a bitter pill to swallow hence resulting in our going into the ditch with this government, but we later gave up, not because we were tired or subdued, but on the contrary because we wanted giving peace a chance and also giving this government a benefit of doubt, but only months into the system, after which we were baptized with different spaces of commercials both in the electronic and printed media assuring us of how the SURE programe will be the watershed in the development of this nation, we were not only overwhelmed we are also left dazed and embarrassed little wonder we allowed only certain percentage of the subsidy to be removed. Its ten months already into the subsidy regime and everything about the experience has come down to a show of shame and mockery. It has left us with two names that we shall all never forget in a hurry not even sickened by amnesia. Yes! Does anyone still need to be reminded of the Farouk-Otedollar blockbuster of a fiction? Certainly none. All the indicted marketers that flawed the subsidy regime have either been left free or are involved in several sham cases and I ask, what is this government that has failed its citizens? What is it with this government that keeps singing of a transformation agenda when all we see everywhere is retrogression in our economic, security, educational and social lives? What is it with this government that has forgotten the core components and contents of its manifesto few years ago when it mounted the podium across virtually all states of the federation singing party chants and at the end of the day deceived us into casting our high priced votes in its honor? Agreed, change may be a gradual process, but in this lame committorial government, where the setting-up of committees that are only quick to pile up reports that are scarcely acted upon, no matter how further I have looked, I am yet to see a single prospect in this administration. 2015 come so soon, let us once again use the power in our votes.
The security and welfare of me and my fellow compatriots has become something we are no longer guaranteed. I keep wondering whether the wordings of the constitution of this republic to this effect “the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary aim of the government”, were expunged from the grundnorm under the watch of this administration. I just hope I am wrong anyway.
Human lives have continued to be lost as though live has got a replacement. Its either we are fallen by the brutal arms of this un-known gunman or we are killed by the same agents of the government who were sent to fight the insurgency and spare our lives in many parts of the north eastern caucus of this country. And I ask again, what is this government that has failed her citizens? The Goodluck Ebele administration has caused this nation more than it could be able to ascertain in the nearest future. Except during the dark days of military regime where corruption rose as high as the Babylonian tower of babel, never was it known an administration where corruption became articles of faith, but the Goodluck-Sambo administration has made that a reality, they have chosen to re-write history. We do not want to know what could have been the reason or whether the principal officers of this administration are ceremoniously involved in this crime, they demanded for our votes and we kept our own part of the deal by casting them in those boxes, so we want answers and dividends and not reasons why they are failing or why they have failed to keep this social agreement.
In the legal world, pacta sunt servanda to the effect that agreements are to be kept still holds sway and it’s either this government are performing or they step aside. The Reasons for non-performance brings not a social pact into termination they say. We have had enough. God bless Nigeria.
