Sometimes, I wonder if the slogan that ‘teachers reward are in heaven’ is the cause of the current underpaid situation that teachers face in Nigeria, but when I compare Nigerian teachers with their foreign counterparts, I get convinced that the Nigerian government have been misled to a misconception that teachers are automatically heaven bound. These are indeed errors of fact and belief, which will be put in correct perspective seriatim. This phenomenon has been widely parodied as an obvious indication of fraudulent intent.
Many states are yet to pay teachers the agreed Teachers Salary Scale (TSS), is this not an obvious indication of a fraudulent intent? Also begging for explanation is the seeming icy silence on the Federal Government. You cannot neglect teaching that spearhead development, and have your education sector revived.
There’s hardly a year that ASUU, ASUP, COEDSU, or NUT which represent teachers in the university, polytechnic, college of education, and primary school respectively, have not gone on strike. Ask a Nigerian pupil if he will end up as a teacher, he will tell you that he would not. The reason for this answer is always that the remuneration is poor. My answer is straight forward, even though it is a personal opinion that I don’t expect anyone to agree with.
In the private sector, while few of them are blazing the trail, some have cashed in on government negligence of teachers to underpay teachers. Today, many graduate teachers are earning as less as N15,000 in private schools. Though many of such private schools are employing based on who bargained the least not minding what the person can offer. To them, to employ those with long experience is not a written rule of course. The Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), a body that is incharge of who teach or not are not also helping matters, as the teaching profession has become an all comers affair. This particular weakness has empowered some private schools proprietors to to recruit teachers not based on what they have upstair, but on who agrees to be paid token. Thanks to names that have been made already that private school is better than public school.
Pay teachers, upgrade Nigerian schools, introduce ICT to schools etc. All these will bring back the lost glory. A situation where most trained teachers don’t want to teach on the ground of poor renumeration, is leaving the profession for charlatans, who take the profession as a stepping stone to next level. I hope the Federal Government realise this, bearing in mind that no firm is immune to collapse once quality is compromised and workforce (the teachers) taken for granted.

I found it difficult to believe that those who offer the best services in nigeria in making every body what to become are the least earners, infact this is what i called psychological and mental myopia from nigerian leaders cos what is happing to our teachers are very good reasons to make every one believe that nigerians are not at any level been represented well, there is nothing any leader is,are or were that teachers hand are not involve if you like go to abroad or in the moon to study you must meet a teacher, even today that we ve once a lecturer as the president of the country yet there still no change in the lifes of our nigerian teachers,i must conclude that there most be someone who is standing as a stumbing block some were, and i advice the teachers to make a true foundings among themself to know if that stumbing block is among their elects or any were else.
