Nigerian soldiers who stormed four areas considered Islamist strongholds in the northeastern city of Maiduguri shot dead about 40 young men, residents and a morgue attendant told AFP Friday.
“Soldiers came in large numbers and asked all of us out. They segregated the young from the old…All we heard were gunshots.
We went to the morgue to collect the bodies and we found 48 in all,” said a resident of the Kalari neighbourhood. An attendant at the Maiduguri General Hospital morgue told AFP they “received 39 bodies yesterday which were brought in by soldiers. They all have fresh gunshot wounds.”
“There are no clear indications that the young men shot were members of the Islamist sect group, but they were killed anyway,” a resident lamented. [AFP]
