In what might be an insight into how political parties in the country operate, chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Attahiru Jega, yesterday, disclosed that they (parties) make provision in their budget estimates, money that will be used to bribe officials of the Commission and Security agents.
According to him, “Political parties budget to bribe security and INEC officials. This is a very serious challenge to our democracy.”
Jega also passed a damning verdict on the financial and procedural accountability of some parties which he described as deficient with “a predeliction to cutting corners.”
The INEC chairman also called for further electoral reforms ahead of the 2015 general elections. This remarks were made by Jega while speaking at a Roundtable Conference on Party Politics in Nigeria and Lobbying the Lobbyist and the Legislature, organised by the National Institute for Legislative Studies, NILS, in Abuja.
