A damning verdict has been passed on graduates who partake in the one year mandatory National Youth Service Corps by the Teachers Council which blamed the high rate of failure witnessed in various examinations on the youth corps members who are posted to teach without being qualified.

The Teachers’ Registration Council of Nigeria, TRCN, on Tuesday, while reacting to an allegation by the FG that they’re partly to blame for the mass failures, called on the leadership of National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, to stop the deployment of corps members, who lack basic knowledge of teaching, to teach in schools.

The Director of Operations of the Council, Steve Nwokocha, made the declaration at the maiden induction/graduation of 118 Professional Diploma in Education graduates held at the Federal College of Education, Osiele, Abeokuta.

“The issue of having mass failure is a process. Part of the people contributing to the process are these corpers. It is an abuse to our profession,” he said.

“Government should stop posting youth corpers to teach in schools. We at the council are against posting of NYSC without teaching background to schools,” he added.

While clarifying his stand, Mr. Nwokocha argued that only graduates of education should be posted to schools, saying the council was ready to rid the country of quack and fake teachers.

“What we are saying is that NYSC should make sure that only corps members who read education should be deployed to schools. Our council is against the deployment of graduates to schools,” he emphasised.

Following a new NYSC posting policy, majority of graduates who partake in the NYSC program annually, are posted to schools to teach.

  • This is purely a lie, corpers do not constitute to failure in exams, your acclaimed staffers who have teaching backgrounds are whacks and CANNOT deliver if you doubt me then take a trip to KOGI STATE, NIGERIA. The problem if there is is from your council and dont blame corpers.

  • Same arguement i had wiv sm1. Only copers who graduated 4rm educational courses should be allowed to teach in school in dat case dey should also be payed well instead of bringin sm garduate frm a non-educational line who doesnt knw d various teaching method to be used.

  • TRCN, dis is absurd it is absolutely lie go to north and see hw corpers are teaching student very well and see hw NCE HOLDER frm north TEACH badly. Don’t blame corpers for mass failure blame ur council 4 bad eggs

  • I cant believe dis teacher could put d blame on corpers, most of dis teachers are very lazy, dey are very happy wen dey see corpers posted into there field, instead to work with d corper dey overload d corper. U can imagin a corper who start teaching riit frm 8am till 2pm. In contrary, some corpers too are lazy, dey take teaching wit levity, u can imagin an engineering student who said she can teach maths and physics, not to talk of intro-tech, instead she prefer Agric.

  • Why should corpers be blamed 4 d student’s failure,we r better n more efficient dan ur so called teachers, majority of them r just too lazy, blame ur teachers dat hav been teachin them 4rm d scratch n not us.

  • Dis is a complete lie! I did my NYSC in niger state. While there,I taught SSS1-3 chemistry.D reason was bcos there was no Chemistry teacher when i arrived d sch n dis is a govt sch.Can u imagine SS3 writing WAEC without a chem teacher? How will they pass?In d same sch,u c teachers sleeping n snoring in d staff room during their lesson periods. They speak d local lang with students in sch n students can’t even put one or two sentences 2geda in English. If dis man is concerned about teachers future,he should tell them to situp not to blame Corpers about students failure.

  • A situation whereby regulatory authuorities judge without finding out what the real problem is………..should b stopped in this country. Imagine, a school that has 12 staffs,(principal, V.p &10 teachers) with 12corpers…..The teachers don’t prepare the students for anything , even in time of exams………they’d rather sit in their staff rooms chatting all day or probably being absent from school @ all time……..wen corpers ‘l b seen sweating it out in the lecture rooms ….these same set of teachers ‘l promote students dt ‘re nt suppose to,…….in order to secure their jobs, making the students uncapable of reading/ understanding the Qs’ in the exams hall………………conclusively, teachers nowadays are more interested in their life than their profession that actualy brings them living….corpers shld never (o be blamed for any lapses….. They shld stop teaching in local languages too.

  • Corpers are nt to be blame for d failure of student, there teacher are to be blame for the failure of there student, cos they brought dem up from grass root, corpers are not to be blame for there failure of the children.

  • What do you expect when u post somebody who studied engineering to go and teach physics n mathematics?Or sombody who studied Biochemistry to go and teach biology and chemistry with the misconception that Biochemistry means biology and chemistry, instead of posting them to hospitals and research institutions and food and drug regulatory agencies.Pls FG should reverse this policy and post corp members to organizations where they wll be useful to themselves and the society.
