Zambian Captain Wins 2012 BBC African Footballer Of The Year Award

In a rather surprising outcome, Christopher Katongo from Zambia, has emerged winner of the 2012 BBC African Footballer of the Year award beating the likes of Demba Ba, Didier Drogba, Younes Belhanda and Yaya Toure to the coveted prize.

To emerge winner, Katongo, 30, amassed 40% of the total votes cast and the elated captain of the Zambian national team couldn’t hide his joy even as he thanked his team mates for their support.

“This means a lot for the young people and the young players who look up to me. I could not have achieved this without the support of my team mates. I did my best and the people have spoken; that’s the beauty of this award.” He said.
