Three people were killed on Saturday when gunmen attacked the convoy of the Emir of Kano, Ado Bayero, one of the top Muslim figures in Nigeria, who was unhurt, Kano state governor said.
“There was an unfortunate incident today. The Emir’s convoy was attacked by unknown gunmen as he was returning from Koranic graduation ceremony in Kano city. Three people in his convoy were killed but the Emir is unhurt,” Musa Rabiu Kwankwaso told AFP.
Other sources say four persons were killed in the attack. The Emir was on his way back to the palace after attending a Quranic competition in the city when unknown gunmen believed to have laid ambush attacked his convoy.
Apart from those who died, several others also sustained serious injuries.
Among those who lost their lives is the interim Chairman of Kumbotso Local Government in the state, Alhaji Muhammad Kura.
The three others were said to be palace guards, but their names were not disclosed.
Bala Salihu, Director of Press to the state’s Deputy Governor Abdullahi Musa Ganduje, said Kura’s remains, taken to the Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital Kano, had been collected for burial.
