Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi has donated the sum of $100,000 to the Super Eagles, saying he still believes the Nigerian flag fliers would still post a successful outing at the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
So far, the team has not performed to expectations in its first two matches where it drew with Burkina Faso and Zambia respectively. Governor Amaechi, who visited the team at their camp in Nelspruit, disclosed that President Goodluck Jonathan is prepared to do everything to please them and ensure that they win the tournament.
The governor was in the company of Nigerian High Commissioner to South Africa, Mr. Sonni Yusuf; Consul General, Mr. Okey Emuchay; and NFF President, Aminu Maigari. He also told the players that billionaire businessman, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, has asked him “to tell the team, that he will donate a huge sum of money to the team should it advance to the quarter-final. He will be here personally to support the team and cheer you to victory.”
The NFF President, Maigari, commended the governor for the support while team captain, Joseph Yobo, promised that the team would not allow the initial setback to frustrate it from achieving its target and that it would surpass the expectations of the people of Nigeria. Maigari also announced that Guinness Nigeria Plc has promised to pay $500,000 for every goal scored by the team.
