Grant Financial Autonomy to Local Governments and Kill Primary Education in the Country – NUT

As the debate continues, whether or not to grant financial autonomy to local governments in the country, the National Union of Teachers (NUT), has kicked against the move, saying granting autonomy to the councils would kill primary education in the country.

The NUT, led by its national president, Michael Olukoya, declared this position during a visit to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Aminu Tambuwal. Speaking about the ongoing constitution review exercise, the NUT national president said “may we, in the spirit of patriotism, inform you that the abolition of State Joint Local Government Accounts, to say the least, would be a disaster to the federal and states administration in so far as implementation of education is concerned.”

Meanwhile, in his response, Honourable Tambuwal said “before now, the impression is that most of the state governors are misapplying the funds,” adding that “your position now opens a new vista.”
