A student has been jailed for five years for assaulting police officers when he unleashed two giant dogs from their cage during a drug raid.

The 26-year-old Iranian defendant released the dogs in an attempt to attack two Emirati officers, when they tried to arrest him over drug charges.

The Dubai Court of First Instance convicted the defendant of possessing and consuming drugs and resisting and assaulting officers. He was fined Dh20,000.

“He resisted us fiercely and tried to prevent us from restraining him. He ran towards the cage in the garden of his villa and opened the door to unleash the dogs against us,” one of the police officers claimed in his statement, adding that the incident happened when a police team was dispatched to arrest the defendant at his Al Qusais home.

Medical reports confirmed the officers sustained bruises and minor injuries.

Presiding Judge Mohammad Jamal convicted the defendant of assault.

The accused will be deported following the completion of his punishment.

The judgement is subject to appeal within 15 days.
