Caught in the Act: LASTMA, Police Officers Caught with Rumpled Notes after Extortion

police10At least nine policemen and one official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) have been arrested for extorting money from motorists in several parts of Lagos State. The suspected security officials were reportedly arrested by men of the X squad, attached to the Lagos State police command during surveillance patrol to Oyingbo, Gbagada and other parts of the state at the weekend.

In recent times, about 20 other policemen had been made to face orderly room trial, with some of them detained, others demoted and some dismissed. According to the Nigerian Tribune three policemen, two of which were traffic wardens, were over the weekend arrested by officials of X squad at the popular Oyingbo central motor park.

The policemen, who were said to have been attached to the Denton Police Station, were reportedly extorting money from luxury bus drivers and other motorists when they were arrested. A source at X squad, who pleaded anonymity, informed the Nigerian Tribune that squeezed and rumpled note were found on the arrested policemen.

The police source also stated that three others, who were attached to the Bariga Police Station, were arrested for extorting money from commercial motorcyclists in inner parts of Gbagada. He added that the Bariga policemen were also arrested with rumpled naira notes, which they tucked in many parts of their uniforms. A senior official at X squad, who pleaded anonymity, confirmed the arrest and added that they had been handed over to the provost for investigations and prosecution. He equally added that an official of LASTMA was also arrested, after he extorted N2, 500 from a supposed traffic offender.
