According to the Nigerian Tribune, no official reason was given for the last minutes cancellation as some of the leaders of the party in the zone being expected at the meeting were already in Abuja. However, it was gathered that the leaders were reportedly furious and fingered the former President Olusegun Obasanjo as the brain behind it.

Alhaji Bamanga Tukur-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the party had, last week, replaced the National Auditor, Chief Bode Mustapha with Alhaji Adewole Adeyanju and the sacked Chief Segun Oni-led zonal executive committee and replaced it with a 17-member caretaker committee, claiming that the actions were in line with court orders. Earlier, Alhaji Tukur had taken similar action against the National secretary of the Party, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola whose case along those of Chiefs Segun Oni and Bode Mustapha are still pending in courts while both Oni and Mustapha even got stay of execution of judgments from the appellate courts.
