Tension Rises As Vice Chancellor Says “No New Church” On Kaduna Campus

A security operative in Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, Kaduna State, has confirmed to SaharaReporters that Vice Chancellor Abdullahi Mustapha’s refusal to allow a Catholic Chapel at the Kongo Campus is creating tension between the Christian community and the management.

Discussions over the building of a new Church on Kongo campus has ongoing been on for years, and the Christian community in the university is accusing the management of favouritism on the grounds that there are several Mosques on the campus and that it has never denied the Muslim community permission to construct a new one.

The security operative said, “As it is now, there is tension because of the development and we have forwarded our security report to our superiors for prompt action.”

In a letter dated February 18, 2013, addressed to the Catholics and the Christian community, Professor Mustapha said, “there will be no more new Churches on the Kongo Campus”, and asked the Christian community to arrange to utilize the existing chapel.

The university is yet to respond to the issue in the media, but the Christian community is understood to have formally alerted the Kaduna State government and the security agencies of the latest developments

  • Nothing that will develop the University to be built except church which can be used to cause crisis. What church can contribute to the development of the University whereas many have been built and still things have not changed for the better in Nigeria.

    • This is not a matter of new church entirely. The cathelic poll down the existing church so as to build a befitting one and muslim community around say no to it, and the vc consent to their no.

    • I don’t know about u but I schooled in ABU, I was there during VC Mahdi, thru the tenure of VC Abdullahi and left with the present VC on seat. ABU is becoming more religion oriented by the day. Fanatics and fanatism is increasing at a alarming rate. The VC is obviously one. We need prayers to save ABU

  • If there are existing churches in the campus, the school authority is entitle to stop construction of new ones, otherwise, soon there will be more churches inside than business centres.

Secondly is that, some schools in the south have expressly forbidden building of Mosques on campus despite the presence of countless number of Churches in them.

  • @wazobia who told you that there are no mosques in uniport and unn?pls confirm your facts correctly before you make your blind argument. There should be freedom of worship.if the church has the money to build a new church in the campus, they should be allowed to do so.
