The world’s largest saltwater crocodile has died after a period of illness.

Lolong, who weighed one ton and measured over 20ft in length, passed away from a bloated stomach after being unwell over the past month.

Villagers in the town of Bunawan in the Philippines are said to be in mourning following his death, reports the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

The animal was captured by a team of 30 men in 2011 after a three-week hunt. He was caught alive and placed in a nature park, becoming the main attraction.

Bunawan Mayor Edwin Elorde said: “He refused to eat since last month and we noticed a change in the colour of his faeces.

“Our personnel also noticed an unusual ballooning of the reptile’s belly.”

Lolong was said to be behind several deadly attacks before he was captured in 2011.

Guinness World Records recognised Lolong as the largest saltwater crocodile in captivity last year, measuring at 20.24ft.

Elorde added that he plans to have the crocodile preserved in order for villagers to pay their respects. [digitalspy]
