Argentinian Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio was elected the 266th pope on Wednesday on the second day of the conclave in Vatican City, after receiving the required two-thirds majority, or at least 77 votes of the 115 cardinal electors from 48 countries.
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has congratulated Nigerians and Catholics all over the world over the emergence of a new Pope.
In a statement by his spokesman Imam Imam, Tambuwal said the emergence of Pope Francis should be a moment of deep reflection for all of humanity.
He called on Pope Francis to continue in the pursuit of global peace and harmony while expressing hope that his reign as head of over 1.2 billion Catholics will usher in a new era in the history of the Catholic church.
