Unknown gunmen on Thursday shot dead a senior lecturer, Engr. Julius Ogungbemi of the department of mechanical engineering, Petroleum Training Institute, PTI, Effurun, near Warri, Delta State.
The gunmen suspected to be a kidnap gang had earlier at the busy Esisi roundabout, Okere, Warri, ambushed a bullion van of the prison service on the way to a Warri High Court for trial, killing two prison officials of the Federal Prisons Okere, one inmate, and freeing two of their members in the process.
The kidnappers were on their way out of Warri along the NPA Expressway by Navy quarters when they ran into Ogungbemi who was driving to the Petroleum Institute and opened fire on him at close range, killing him instantly.
Ogungbemi in his late 50s according to PTI sources had put in almost 21-years of service at the Institution before his untimely death.
Police sources from the Ekpan Divisional Headquarters confirmed the story.
While the car is presently at the Ekpan police station, the remains of the late Ogungbemi has been deposited at the Warri Central Hospital. [VN]
