The International Criminal Police Organization, widely known as INTERPOL, says it will partner with Nigeria to fight cross border crimes, drug trafficking, corruption and terrorism in a bid to achieve global peace.
President of the organisation, Mrs Mereille Ballestrazzi, gave the assurance in Abuja yesterday when she paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Police Affairs, retired Navy Capt. Caleb Olubolade.
Ballestrazzi, who expressed concern about the security situation in the country, listed the area of collaboration as timely and accurate exchange of information for effective law enforcement.
She commended Nigeriaās commitment to the ideals that informed the setting up of the INTERPOL and its active participation in INTERPOL activities.
Responding, Olubolade urged the INTERPOL to assist Nigeria to set up a National Crime Database for improved policing.
He gave the assurance that Nigeria would continue to honour its obligations to the organisation. According to him, a revitalised collaboration between Nigeria and the INTERPOL will impact positively on the security situation in the country.
Ballestrazzi also visited the Inspector General of Police, Mr Mohammed Abubakar, at the Force Headquarters, Abuja.
She said that the purpose of her visit was to explore the possibility of collaborating with the police in training and information exchange to make the country and the world a safer place.
In his response, Abubakar, who was represented by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Investigations, Mr Peter Gana, said the collaboration was necessary to make the country and the world safe for economic and other activities.
