A New York City mother on Wednesday jumped down the window of her 8th floor apartment while clutching her baby son in an apparent suicide.
West Harlem resident Cynthia Wachenheim was found dead on the pavement while her 10-month-old son Keston wailed outside of his mother’s grip.
Fellow apartment resident Steven Dominguez saw the 45-year-old Columbia University law student fall with the infant clutched in her arms.
“I was shocked. I couldn’t believe it,” the 18-year-old told the Associated Press.
Police also discovered a seven-page suicide letter under a bed in Wachenheim’s apartment. She reportedly wrote the note to her husband, saying “she recognized what she was about to do was ‘evil’ but she was concerned about how her child was developing.” However, neighbours said they were unaware of any mental or physical problems baby Keston had.
The baby is in critical but stable condition at Harlem Hospital.
