The Federal Government, through the Minister of Interior, Comrade Abba Moro, has defended the President’s decision to exercise the prerogative of mercy in the reported pardon of former Bayelsa State Governor, Deprieye Alamieyeseigha and others, a move that was said to have been approved by the National Council of State on Tuesday.
Speaking to State House correspondents in Abuja on Wednesday on the move, Mr Labaran Maku, maintained that he could not confirm it because he had not been briefed. However, he had a few things to say about it:
“That meeting (NCS) lasted very late yesterday. The truth is that the prerogative of mercy, granting of pardon is a normal process which the National Council of States does occasionally to all manner of people who were interjected in the past including prisoners, including those who had committed the highest crime against the country,” he said.
