Vehicles worth N416.5 million have been purchased by the Yobe State government for 14 traditional rulers in the state.

Speaking yesterday while inspecting the 34 vehicles that include 17 Toyota Prado SUVs and Hilux vans, Governor Ibrahim Gaidam said the vehicles were acquired to facilitate the monarchs’ traditional functions effectively.

“As custodians of our culture, they deserved brand new vehicles for hitch free functions; this, at least, will save them from having broken down vehicles at the middle of road or punctured tyres. Each of the 14 traditional rulers will get one Prado jeep and a Hilux van for escort”, he said.

Gaidam, who stated that there was no definite source of financing the state’s traditional institutions when he assumed office in 2007, explained that his administration created an “emirates’ accounts” and mandated the 17 local governments to make monthly contribution of N5 million each for rehabilitation, construction and for other logistic support in their respective palaces.
