FG plans to scrap colleges of education and abolish NCE

THE Federal Government, proposed a plan on Thursday to scrap colleges of education and abolish the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) as the basic requirement for teaching in secondary and primary schools in Nigeria.

Minister of State for Education, Mr Kenneth Gbagi, said this in Abuja while inaugurating the technical committee on the establishment of six new federal universities and the future of colleges of education, polytechnics, and mono-discipline universities in Nigeria.

The 11-man technical committee is headed by the Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Julius Okojie, while the Chief Executive Officer and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, is to serve as the secretary. The committee has up till Monday, next week, to submit its report.

The minister said: “We are on the verge of whether we should phase out the colleges of education or upgrade them to degree-awarding institutions or convert them to purely technical schools. One of the universities we are going to set up now will be to train teachers for the upper echelon of education,” he also said “it is no longer fashionable for us to have this teacher training stuff with colleges of education. So, come up with an in-depth arrangement as to what we intend to do.”

Mr Kenneth disclosed that President Goodluck Jonathan had directed that the committee be set up to work out modalities for the establishment of the proposed six universities, one in each of the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria, especially in states that do not have such federal institutions.

  1. Hmm! I dont think this developmnt will be welcomed by ordinary nigerians. Colleges of education s d only kind of institutions on which poor nigens have hope in. I cant believe hw government s trying to snatch everything that remains in d posession of its citizens and tarnish other ways in which they hv hope without puttn something better in place. Am crying for this.

  2. My fellow country men, can we afford watching these clueless politicians bringing all sort of bear falour policies that will definately cause havoc to the educational system of this country? 3. @Gift, think b4 u talk……
    Nigeria leaders are working…..
4now, they are the best leaders in the world….
Anyway, scrapping NCE simply means upgrading NCE to a degree certificate and college of education as university, so that there will be more university admission for the citizens of this great country….. In other word, the youth can be educated and engage themself with something doing rather than jobless wasting time at home….
Education is the key to success…
If one is educated, he don’t put blame on anyone…
Every educated person is a problem solver or solution giver…..
Scraping NCE will make college of education, polytechnics equal university…..

  6. I like d idea and knowledge of federal government especially concerning colleges of education bcos u can c N.C.E graduate without knowing how to spell his or her name correctly, it’s very bad and such a thing is bringing shame to Nigerian people.

    • Mr Etim i expected you to say the n c e
standard of education should be upgraded
by the government. Instead of surporting
that it should be scraped. If its to be that
way then what about your less previlledge
      brothers or neibourghs?

  7. Lets always keep away personal policies and face reality.nigeria is expecting to become one of the top countries by twenty twenty, our existing universities are still sub standard compear to other countries, lets thing of uplifting them to expectation not destroying the paupers abode.despite the amount of teachers trianed by this same institution you want to scrap, this countries lacks tutors @ the grassroot level.why not try to correct such problems like poverty, unemployment .etc instead of wasting our money in setting commitees and establishing 6 new universities.

  8. Nigeria government are the government of the animal.government dat they dont like the progress of their neabour.dat is why educational sector are lacking behind.and teacher are not encouraging.when their is no knowledge people perish. 10. WHY SHOULD COLLEGE OF EDUCATION BE SCRAP ? IS THERE ANY PROBLEM WITH COLLEGE OF EDUCATION IN NIGERIA SYSTEM OF EDUCATION ? WHAT THEY COULD HAVE DONE IS TO CHANGE SYSTEM OF EDUCATION TO BE : PRIMARY,SECONDARY,UNIVERSITY AND ULTRAVERSITY . WHERE YOU CAN OBTAIN A HIGHER CERTIFICATE THAN DEGREES . COS ALL THIS SORT OF IDEAS OF SCRAPING COLLEGES OF EDUCATION IS ANTI-CLOCKING THE SYSTEM OF EDUCATION . INSTEAD THEY COULD HAVE CREATE A SOLID FOUNDATION AT THE PRIMARY LEVEL .
