The Dubai Court of Misdemeanours heard the case of a drunken Sudanese who celebrated getting a money transfer worth Dh250,000 (N10,750,750) from his home country by shredding Dh500 (N21,501) notes and throwing them out of a taxi window. The defendant was however absent at the hearing.

Prosecutors said the 44-year-old got into a taxi drinking with two female friends and started shredding the banknotes into confetti and tossed them out of the taxi. The cabbie who picked up the trio around 3am on November 25 near Deira City Centre called the police to report the man’s action.

“I’d just received a cash transfer of Dh250,000 from Sudan. I was too happy and felt like celebrating,” the defendant said.

The visas of the women were found to have expired. The trio were charged with illegally consuming alcohol and fined Dh2,000 (N86,033) each, while the women were charged with living in the UAE illegally.
