Man Sleeps Next To The Body Of His Dead Girlfriend For Several Days

A North Carolina man allegedly slept in a bed next to his deceased girlfriend’s body for days, rather than reporting her death.

Randall Johnson, 44, was arrested Saturday after the body of Carla Jean Baggett was found in the couple’s bedroom, WNCT reported.

Baggett was last seen alive Wednesday. Her mother, nephew and sister all lived in the single-wide mobile home in Williamston with the couple, but family members say Johnson kept coming up with excuses regarding why his girlfriend wasn’t leaving their bedroom.

Baggett’s nephew told WCTI 12 that Johnson would say the woman was sleeping, or smoking a cigarette.

Phyllis King, Baggett’s mother, told WITN that Johnson said Baggett had overdosed on Xanax, but was OK.

“I said ‘well, she’s been sleeping a long time,'” King told the station. “I went back in there that night; she was still sleeping. I went back in there the next morning — she was still sleeping.”

King says she threatened to call 911, but Johnson reassured her that her daughter was fine. On Saturday, “However, she says she went into the room, touched her daughter and realized she was dead. She then called 911.

“It appears that the victim had been dead for several days,” Lt. Drew Robinson told WCTI 12. “However, at this time we are unable to say an exact time or date of the death.”

Deputies also believe that Johnson had been sleeping next to the corpse for a few nights.

Investigators say that they do not suspect foul play and there is no indication that Johnson was involved in Baggett’s death. He has been charged with concealing a death from law enforcement and is being held on a $100,000 secured bond.

A cause of death has not yet been reported.
