Nigeria Doesn’t Need Parliamentary System Of Government – Balarabe Musa

Elder statesman and national Chairman, Conference of Nigeria’s Political Parties, CNPP, Alhaji Balarabe Musa, has said that the presidential system of government was the best for the country.

He said this in response to calls by some Nigerians for a change from the presidential system of government to the parliamentary model.

A parliamentary system is a system of democratic governance of a state in which the executive branch derives its democratic legitimacy from, and is held accountable to the legislature.

In his words, “We are worried about the negative state of the nation, particularly the level of corruption, killings and criminal waste of resources, failure to have free, fair and transparent elections,’’ Musa said.

He added that the problems would not be solved by merely returning to the parliamentary system of government simply because it is cheaper.

“We should do something about the high level of corruption in Nigeria; if this is done, we will achieve peace and progress.

“The presidential system should continue because it gives sufficient power to those who can deal with the problems of the country,” he said.

Nigeria is currently rated as one of the most corrupt countries in the world, with corrupt individuals occupying different offices in government.
