A woman was on Saturday feared dead while others were injured at Gbelekale, Orita-Aperin area of Ibadan after the fence of the constituency office of the Minister of State for Federal Capital Territory, Mrs. Olajumoke Akinjide, collapsed and fell on them.
The incident occurred during the tractor and fertilizer distribution ceremony to farmers in the 33 local government areas of the state by the minister.
It was gathered that the structure collapsed as the crowd tried to gain entrance to the venue of the empowerment programme.
Those affected were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Eyewitnesses attributed the incident to over-crowding and inappropriate venue for the occasion.
An eyewitness, Muraina Liadi, said, “The venue was too small for the programme. You can see many people turned out in large number to witness the occasion but there was space constraint.
“About four people were injured. The fence fell on a woman and we don’t know her fate. Some said she is dead but we are not sure.”
The Publicity Secretary of Peoples Democratic Party in Oyo State, Lukman Agboluaje, also said, “It was as a result of pressure of the crowd that came to welcome Jumoke Akinjide on the occasion of fertilizer and tractor distribution to farmers in the state.
“You can see that the building is okay but the pressure was responsible for the collapse. About two or three people were injured. We do not know the gravity of the injury. Some of them who had light injuries were discharged after treatment”.
Akinjide distributed 100bags of fertilizers to each of the 33 local government councils in the state and three tractors to three councils. [Punch]
