Gov. Nyako Commends Jimeta Residents For Confronting Gunmen

Murtala NyakoThe Governor of Adamawa State, Murtala Nyako, on Monday commended residents of Nasarawa in Jimeta, Yola, for rising up against a gang of gunmen and facilitating their arrest.

On Friday, a gang of gunmen, while attempting to rob a super market, opened fire near a mosque in Nasarawa quarters of Jimeta.

Many of the worshipers at the mosque rushed the gunmen, chanting, “Allah hu akbar” – God is great.

The gunmen, on sighting the daring crowd rushing toward them, aborted their robbery and took to their heels.

However, some members of the Igbo community in the city blocked the fleeing robbers, causing their arrest.

Speaking on the development, Mr. Nyako lauded the action taken by the residents, describing it as “a welcome move we must take in tackling the present security challenges in the country.”

He noted that security was not the responsibility of government alone.

The governor particularly commended the courageous effort of a woman in helping in the arrest of the gunmen and directed his chief of staff to identify the woman for special reward.

One of the arrested gunmen later provided the Adamawa Police with information leading to the police confronting the hoodlums in a shootout at their hideout and killing six of them.

Mr. Nyako assured of his administration’s commitment to ensure safety of lives and property. He said that his administration had embarked on various empowerment programmes to create jobs and reduce poverty.

The governor said that various skills acquisition centres opened across the state had been training about 3,000 people annually. The successful trainees were thereafter given tools to establish their own businesses.

“Now, we have less cases of theft and burglary in our neighbourhoods as many of the jobless youths have taken advantage of the opportunities we provided to be gainfully employed,” Mr. Nyako stated.
