Lagos Residents Assured On Measures To Reduce Incidences Of Flooding

Gov.-Babatunde-Raji-Fashola1Lagos State Ministry of Environment said on Sunday that  it had put in place measures to reduce to the barest minimum, incidences of flooding in the state.

This is contained in a statement signed by the Ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Fola Adeyemi.

The statement said the Commissioner for Environment, Mr Tunji Bello, monitored the mid-rain cleaning programme embarked upon by the Drainage Maintenance Office and Emergency Flood Abatement Unit of the ministry.

The ministry assured Lagos residents that the state government would sustain its all-year maintenance and cleaning programmes.

It said that this would ensure that major canals and channels were kept clean to allow free flow and discharge of water whenever it rains.

“It will be recalled that the Lagos State Government alerted Lagos residents earlier in the year that the state is to experience rains of high intensity with accompanied thunderstorms.

“We have put in place deliberate preventive plans and programmes to ensure that the incidence of flooding is reduced to the barest minimum.

“This is despite global climatic occurrences which have made coastal states across the world susceptible to flooding, ‘’ the statement said.

The ministry said that Lagosians residing along Kuramo beach, Alpha beach, Okun Mapo, Owode Elede, Ikorodu, Badia, Ijora, Ajegunle and other low line areas, should be ready to relocate when the rains becomes severe.

The statement added that the ministry’s actions became necessary following predictions by meteorologists that more rains would likely be recorded this year.

  1. I want to comment that the Lagos State govt under the amiable Gov. Batunde Fashola is performing creditably well. However, there is need to urgently address an issue on Lagos – Badagry Exp. Way.

There is this bump that was erected vertically (not the usual horizontal) between coker bus stop and Alaba – Suru on Lagos – Badagry exp.way. The bump I believe is to allow trucks and container have access into factories along the road, but alas, it was not professionally done and can cause ACCIDENT at night, if vehicle ran into the bump. Your prompt action is required, to avoid loss of lives.

    Thank you
