Man Docked For Attempting To Dupe Lagos

A 44-year-old man has been arraigned at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, by the Office of the Attorney-General of Lagos State, for allegedly trying to defraud Lagos State Government of fees for Land Use Charge.

Matonle Wahab’s suspected accomplice, Mr. Bisi Peter, is still at large.

Wahab stands trial for a two-count charge before Ms. Demi Ajayi, the presiding Magistrate.

His charge sheet read, “That you Matonle Wahab and Bisi Peter on or about the 17th Day of April, 2013 at the Lagos State Government Secretariat, Alausa conspired together to defraud Lagos State Government of the sum of N1,479, 036.60k and committed offence contrary to and punishable under section 323 (1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State.”

The prosecution was led by Inspector Barth Nwakaoye, alleged that the defendant paid N200,000 as Land Use Charge to the government instead of N1.47m.

Nwakaoye said Wahab paid the wrong amount without lawful authority and with intent to defraud the government.

He said the defendant’s action contravened section 320(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011, adding that If found guilty, he is liable to about 15 years imprisonment.

Matonle was granted bail in the sum of N500,000, with two sureties in the like sum, as Ms Ajayi adjourned the case till July 7, 2013.
