PDP Suspension: Amaechi Is A Victim Of Political Witch-Hunt – Rivers Government

The suspension of Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi as a member of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has been described as a “witch-hunt” by the Rivers State Government.

Mr. Amaechi was earlier today suspended by the party’s National Working Committee, NWC, after an emergency meeting which considered a petition from the Rivers PDP Executive Committee against him.

Responding to Amaechi’s suspension on behalf of the State Government, Commissioner for Information, Ibim Semenitari, in a brief statement said the state government is concerned by the development.

“We are concerned as we believe this is political witch hunt,” she said, adding that “it is worrisome, because the reason given is the suspension of the Obio Akpor council chairman and the 17 councillors”.

Ms. Semenitari added that the reason given by the NWC for the suspension order is not tenable as it is “purely a legislative matter and done in accordance to the laws of local government councils in Rivers State.”

It would be recalled that the PDP in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary – Chief Olisa Metuh in Abuja today, said Mr. Amaechi was suspended for contravening “Articles 58 1 (b), (c ), (h) and (m) of the PDP Constitution following his refusal to obey the lawful directive of the Rivers State Executive Committee to rescind his decision dissolving the elected Executive Council of Obiokpor Local Government Area of Rivers State”.
