Plateau Reconciliation Bid Threatened As Gunmen Behead Berom Man

gov_jonah_jang_plateau1The recent peace moves by security agencies and other stakeholders on the Plateau to bring an end to the incessant killings especially in the Plateau North Senatorial district of the state, received a major blow at the weekend as unknown gunmen beheaded a man just outside his compound.

The man, from the Berom speaking tribe, was killed at about 4:30 a.m. outside his compound, when gunmen invaded Gyel village in Jos South Local Government Area.

A source said that immediately they killed the man, his head was made away with just as the assailants fired several shots into the air to scare other people living within the vicinity from coming out of their respective houses.

Though accusing fingers were not immediately pointed at anyone, the victim’s neighbours said the killing was a sign that  the peace efforts might have failed.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Felicia Anslem, confirmed the unfortunate incident, saying the police had commenced investigation into the killing.

“We are aware of the incident, the police have commenced full investigation into the incident. I cannot say anything now, because investigation is going on,” she said.
