Barcelona, who would have sealed their 22nd league title if Real had dropped points at home; will have to wait till next Sunday when they play Atletico Madrid.

Real took an early lead as Raul Albiol headed home, but Roque Santa Cruz leveled before Malaga were reduced to ten men when Sanchez pulled Ronaldo down in the box.

Four minutes later after Willy Caballero saved Ronaldo’s penalty with an outstretched foot, the winger scored with a free- kick and then teed- up Mesut Ozil who danced past two defenders to make it 3-1.

Vitorino Antunes reduced the deficit with a wonder strike, but his goal didn’t last long as Karim Benzema made it 4-2 from Ronaldo’s cross in first- half injury time.

Demichelis was sent off for a second bookable offence after a foul on Ronaldo before Ozil went over awkwardly and appeared to injure his right knee.

Luka Modric and Angel Di Maria rounded off the scoring for Madrid as the game finished 6-2 at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

Atletico Madrid’s 3-2 victory over Celta Vigo earlier in the evening guaranteed them a Champions League slot for next season.
