Three robbers were yesterday killed in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State, the State Police Command has said.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ben Ugwuegbulam, said the deceased were robbing a residential building at Ebubu in the early hours of yesterday when the Police got a distress call and quickly rushed to the scene. The robbery suspects were arrested on a motor bike while trying to escape.

Although their first trial failed, the suspects tried to escape again as they were being driven to the Divisional Police station in the area. They jumped from the patrol vehicle, a situation that caused the police to open fire on them. They were later rushed to a hospital where they were confirmed dead.

The Police spokesman said a locally made revolver pistol with three rounds of live 9mm ammunition and one expended shell were recovered from them.

“At about 0200hrs distress call was received that hoodlums had attacked a residential building at Ebubu Eleme. Swiftly anti robbery patrol team from Eleme police Division was mobilised and drafted to the scene.

“Three suspects were intercepted on a Qlink motor cycle speeding out from the building by the police team and when searched a locally made revolver pistol with three rounds of live 9mm ammunition and one expended shell were recovered from them.

“While taking them to the station, the suspects jumped down from the vehicle. They were given a hot chase by the patrol team and when it was impossible to re arrest them were fired at to stop them from escaping. Consequently, they were fatally wounded in the process and were immediately rushed to Eleme General hospital, Eleme,” he said.
