Spanish midfielder Xabi Alonzo is out of Spain’s Confederations Cup squad as a result of a groin injury.
Chelsea’s Fernando Torres and Arsenal’s Santi Carzorla are among the provisional 26- man squad and also part of the seven England- based players included.
Alonzo is not the only name cut from coach Vicente del Bosque’s provisional squad, Fellow midfielders Jarvi Garcia of Manchester City and Benat Etxebarria of Real Betis are also excluded.
The European and World champions will face Tahiti, Uruguay and Nigeria at the Confederation Cup, which begins from June 15 to 30.
Torres had failed to make the Spanish national team squad as Del Bosque had preferred lining up midfielders upfront in recent outings.
Having scored 23 goals for the Blues this season, Del Bosque said the 23- year- old’s time is has finally come. Torres has scored 31 goals in 101 appearances for the Spanish national team.
“When Torres and Javi Martinez (Bayern Munich midfielder) didn’t come in before, it was because we didn’t think the moment was right. Now it is the opposite- they are both in good form,” Del Bosque said.
Spain will travel to the United States for friendlies against Haiti on Saturday and the Republic of Ireland in New York next week Tuesday before heading south to Brazil.
