D’Tigers got off to a losing start in their FIBA Stankovic Cup campaign. They lost 61-56 to a fired up German side in Lanzhou in the opener.

Mathis Monninghoff (199-G/F-92, college: Gonzaga) scored 19 points to lead the winners. Konstantin Klein (187-PG-91, agency: LUMANI 10.7) delivered 14 points, while Ole Wendt (190-PG-92) added 11 points for Germany.

Germany stayed close throughout the opening quarter. They were tied at 18 after ten minutes. Nigeria pulled ahead in the second quarter. The African powerhouse held Germany to 8 points in the period and established a 31:26 halftime lead. But the Europeans quickly erased the deficit.

They triggered an 18:11 run in the third quarter to gain a 44:42 lead heading into the fourth period. Germany held their opponents to 14 points in the final frame and escaped with a narrow win at the end.

Stan Okoye (198-F-91, agency: Interperformances) led Nigeria’s scorers’ chart with 16 points, while Olumide Oyedeji (210-C-81) had 13 points in the loss.
