Newly elected president of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF) Dr Daniel Igali has pledged to use his offices and contact to rally support in view of the reinstatement of wrestling in the Olympic with the 2020 Games their target.
Dr Igali, a former wrestler and a gold medalist in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games was one of the five panelists selected for the SportsAccord Conference in St Petersburg Russia, where they addressed the International Olympic Committee Executive Board on the need to reinstate wrestling in the Olympics.
He was however delighted of the proceedings at the IOC presentations as eight sports took to the podium to address the IOC Executive Board with the aim of being shortlisted as one of the three sports for a final vote in September in Buenos Aires.
“I was one of the five people around the world in the wrestling family that were selected by the International Wrestling Federation to make the presentations to the IOC,” Igali said.
“We were in St Petersburg for three days for rehearsals before the event proper on the 29th of May.
“All five of us made presentations to the IOC and wrestling passed on the first ballot. While Softball/Baseball and Squash were shortlisted for final consideration in September in Buenos Aires,” Igali said.
