A Pakistani expatriate has died after he was forced to walk for more than 40 kilometres in the unforgiving desert of northwestern Saudi Arabia.

The man reportedly was on his way from a village to the city of Amlaj driving on a desert road when his vehicle broke down.

Unable to find any assistance, he walked under the scorching sun towards the nearest village, more than 40 kilometres away, local news site Sabq reported on Monday.

When he reached a mosque, he was so thirsty that he drank a lot of water before he collapsed, the report said.

Police in Amlaj are working on completing the regular procedures, Sabq said. Most online comments attributed the death to extreme dehydration and heat exhaustion.
