Super Eagles midfielder, John Mikel Obi, has voiced his displeasure over the failure of African champions, Nigeria, to defeat Spain in Sunday’s Fifa Confederations Cup game in Fortaleza.
A Jordi Alba brace and Fernando Torres’ header condemned the Super Eagles to a 3-0 defeat against the reigning world and European champions at the Estadio Castelao, but Mikel feels things could have been so different.
“We came out to defeat the Spanish side and I think we may have even had the better possession against the World Champions but we simply did not take our chances and they took theirs, so we paid for our mistakes and are now heading out of the championship,” he said.
Mikel was one of Nigeria’s best players in the tournament. He scored a stunning goal in Nigeria’s second game against Uruguay and came close against Spain only to be denied a certain goal by a last minute block with Victor Valdez transfixed in the La Furia Roja goal.
The Chelsea midfielder has made 51 appearances for the Super Eagles scoring 4 times.
