D’Tigers Beat Puerto Rico, Finish Third in Round Two of Stankovic Cup.

Nigeria’s D’Tigers recorded their second win in the second stage of the 9th Stakovic Continental Champions Cup against Puerto Rico. The victory came at the back of two defeats to China (58-52) and Argentina (73-58) since moving to Guangzhou after their first-round loss to champions Australia.

Nigeria clinched the third position at the Second Stage. They overcame Puerto Rico 67-70 in Guangzhou on Tuesday night.

The teams traded baskets throughout the first period. The teams were locked at 15-all after ten minutes. They went neck and neck throughout the second frame.

The scoreboard read 28-28 at halftime. Puerto Rico pulled ahead in the second frame. They registered a 47-46 lead heading into the fourth period. But Nigeria erupted for 24 points in the final term and stole the victory.

Olumide Oyedeji (210-C-81) stepped up with 16 points to pace D’Tigers. Stan Okoye (198-F-91) chipped in 13 points for the winners. Richard Oruche (193-SG-87, college: Ill.-Springfield) and Stanley Gumut (197-F-86) added 11 points each for Nigeria.

Derick Beltran (193-G-89, college: Southern) answered with 16 points for Puerto Rico. Carlos Lopez-Sosa (211-F-90) netted 15 points in the loss.
